ITV News host Tom Bradby has opened up about his past mental breakdown, saying it was ‘100 times worse than being shot’.

In 2018, the 55-year-old journalist took time off work after developing insomnia, which resulted in an ‘addiction’ to the sleeping pill zopiclone.

Now getting candid on Loose Women about his past struggles, Tom explained: ‘I had terrible insominia and it got so bad.

‘At one stage I was lying on the floor outside our bedroom with my wife lying beside me saying, “It’s gonna be alright, I don’t know what’s happening but we’re gonna get you through this,”‘ he said.

‘I was in such a hideous mess,’ he added.

Tom went on to recall being shot in 1999 when he was covering a riot in Jakarta, saying the breakdown felt worse.

‘I got shot in Jakarta in ’99 and that was bad and painful but this was 100 times worse,’ Tom continued. ‘I thought I was going mad, I didn’t know what was happening to me.’

The presenter remembered that, one week, he attempted to come back to work to present the ITV News At 10, but added: ‘By 7 o’clock, I was having a panic attack so bad I thought I was having a heart attack.

‘I lay down on the floor of my office, put my feet in the air, and I came within an ace of calling an ambulance.’

He said he felt okay actually presenting the news, but when he went home, he collapsed and could not get out of bed the next morning.

Thankfully, Tom is doing better now and has decided to be open about his past struggles in the hopes that it will help others.

He previously said of the decision: ‘My fundamental reason for doing conversations like this is you think, “well, if I can even help one or 10 people who are listening, who might get something out of it, then that’s great.”’

Tom added on the Desperately Seeking Wisdom podcast: ‘A lot of people who come talk to you just don’t understand what’s happening to them. They’ve got this terrible anxiety or depression, or whatever it is.
