Gentleman Jack fans have been desperate to see Ann Walker and Anne Lister finally get their happy ending, but will it really happen?

In recent weeks, the BBC drama has shared insight into the first few months of married life after Walker (Sophie Rundle) and Lister’s (Suranne Jones) secret union.

However, with it being 1834, not everything has gone as smoothly as they might have hoped, culminating in Lister briefly rekindling her romance with ex-lover Marianna Lawton (Lydia Leonard) when she paid her a visit to Lawton Hall.

Ever since, Lister has kept the passionate night a secret, failing to tell Walker what really happened.

But in Sunday night’s finale, she will finally be questioned by her partner on her stay at Lawton Hall,

In a clip exclusively shared with Metro.co.uk, the pair are in a tense exchange on the way back to London, and it’s clear Walker isn’t happy with her wife’s attitude.

Lister said of their stay in the city: ‘The London trip was primarily for you, for you find a schoolmaster, to see the dentist, to see Mr Benjamin, to see Ms Plough, to see Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, for you to get away.

‘No, it wasn’t. It was for you to see your friends,’ Walker retorted, leading Lister to hit back: ‘Oh, so none of those other things happened.’

‘I won’t be sifted for money,’ her wife responded. ‘We said our arrangement would be as good as a marriage.’

‘As far as it could be, yes,’ Lister noted.

In a very assertive response, Walker said: ’You should have taken me to see your friends.

‘I am your wife when it’s convenient when you need money, in bed, but when it comes to your aristocratic people, I’m an inconvenience.

‘Then there’s Mrs Lawton,’ leading a surprised Lister to repeat her ex’s name back to her partner.

‘I know there was more to it, that night when you came back from Lawton Hall,’ Walker said. ‘The damage is done, I’ve seen you in your true colours.’

But Lister came back fighting: ‘I got you an appointment with the king’s surgeon. Not only because he’s the king’s surgeon but because he’s also the leading expert in jaw pain, which I bothered to find out for you.
