A woman who was abandoned as a baby and tracked down her family 34 years later has shared her story with Lorraine Kelly.

The ITV chat show featured a hugely emotional segment on Wednesday as Lorraine interviewed 34-year-old Niki, who was abandoned on the steps of a tower block as a newborn.

She was discovered by a shocked passerby and handed over to police officer Niki Babbington, whom she was later named after.

Officer Niki was working the front desk of the local police station when she handled a bundle, which she initially thought was a coat, before realising it was a tiny baby girl.

Baby Niki was adopted, and her parents kept the name Niki, which allowed the mum-of-one to find officer Niki over 25 years later.

The pair now share a strong bond, with officer Niki even apologising to Niki live on-air that she had received a name that was spelled in such an unusual way – but the unique name proved a huge help in tracking the officer down.

Niki’s story is set to be told in full on Wednesday night on Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace with Davina McCall, which helps people abandoned as babies to find their birth family.

In a clip shown on the ITV chat show, Niki learns she has three older siblings and one younger: two brothers and two sisters, who were brought up together with Niki’s birth parents.

In the clip, Niki becomes tearful as she learns her parents already had children and went on to have another after they abandoned her, admitting it’s ‘very hard to hear because you think, what was wrong with me?’

Niki becomes tearier still when she learns her siblings want to get to know her, but this time her tears are of happiness.

Niki admitted it was ‘so important’ to her to trace a piece of her history, having been inspired to do so by her daughter, Paige, who asked her: ‘I know daddy’s white but what’s the other half of me?’

‘I couldn’t give her the answer, and it made me a bit sad because she was kind of thinking like how I was when I was growing up,’ Niki explained to Lorraine.

Nikki got in contact with the Long Lost Family team, and after some intense digging, was reconnected with her family, though her birth parents had sadly died some years earlier.

She admitted it was difficult to know she would never be able to ask her parents why she was abandoned, and as a mother couldn’t imagine ever imagine doing that to her own child.

‘When I gave birth to Paige and the midwife handed me her,’ she began, having to dab at her eyes with a tissue.

‘I remember looking at my mum and asking “Why? Why did this happen to me?”

‘I was looking at this baby and I just wanted to love her and protect her and you get all those emotions…’

Now that Niki has been reunited with her family, the siblings are making up for lost time, with Niki’s brother John appearing on the show with a recorded video message where he admitted he was ‘really grateful’ Niki had tracked them down.

‘We gained a sister we really love, and her family, that we all really want to make good memories with,’ John said, as Niki shed further tears.
