Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou) is left speechless in Neighbours when estranged mum Estelle (Maria Mercedes) rocks up on her doorstep, looking for a roof over her head

The former general manger of Lassiters, as viewers know, is currently in the middle of a messy divorce, one which is has been made all the more messy by Paul Robinson’s (Stefan Dennis) constant scheming.

To add to her struggles, boyfriend Glen Donnelley (Richard Huggett) is in hospital after his life-threatening accident, so it’s safe to say that the last thing Terese needs right now is an impromptu visit from her mother, who brands her a ‘hell raiser’.

The nickname is anything but affectionate, which is all the subtext one needs when working out what kind of a relationship the mother and daughter duo have.

‘Terese and Estelle had a huge falling out a long time ago,’ actress Rebekah Elmaloglou told Metro.co.uk. ‘Over 15 years ago, Terese was like: “I never want to see you again! Stay out of my life.”

‘So, for Estelle to appear back in Terese’s life is huge, because there’s a part of Terese that wants to be loved by her mother. She would love a relationship with her, but unfortunately Estelle is just one of those women who chose life over caring for her children.

Rebekah told us that Estelle is ‘jealous’ of Terese, given all that she has achieved, both personally and professionally.

‘Terese had both the career and the family – and made it work,’ said the soap star. ‘Estelle didn’t, and envied her daughter. So, it’s a very broken relationship.

‘Terese is just constantly trying to forgive and forget, but she just keeps being let down by Estelle. She’s constantly disappointed by her mother, but her arrival causes more drama to everything that’s already going on!’

More drama indeed, as animosity ensues between the two pretty much straight away. Estelle, you see, claims that she’s shown up to support her daughter. Terese, however, reckons she’s not being genuine.

‘She is suspicious straight away!,’ exclaimed Rebekah. ‘I don’t blame her, at all. And sure enough, it comes out that Estelle is not there to make amends with Terese at all. She’s been kicked out of her previous home with Terese’s brother and has nowhere to go!’

Terese and Estelle, despite their differences, find common ground next week, as the duo visit Josh’s plaque, in a moment that Rebekah described as ‘lovely’. The actress, however, warns that, despite the pair’s connection in this particular scene, Estelle will soon let Terese down once more.

How? By chasing Paul, of course!

‘Terese is furious!,’ adds Rebekah of the plot development. ‘But it’s not surprising, this is not the first time Estelle has done this. The reason they had this massive falling out years ago was because Estelle was flirting with Brad. This isn’t new for Terese, at all. But of all people, not Paul!’

There will be much more drama to come on-screen, that’s for sure, but behind the scenes, Rebekah couldn’t be more delighted at the prospect of finally being able to explore more of Terese’s backstory, telling us that she was so ‘excited’ when she first found out about Estelle’s introduction.

‘They’ve been talking about this for years,’ she said. ‘We started talking about this before Covid, but it just kept getting put off for various reasons. For me, it was really important.

‘Terese’s fans have always wanted to know a little bit about her background. We all know she’s this amazing little powerhouse career woman and has a family. She’s incredible. We knew that she grew up in Darwin, and that she didn’t have a great upbringing, but we didn’t really know the details.

‘So when the producer started talking about bringing Estelle in, I was thrilled. I was like: “Yes! Finally!”.
