Edinson Cavani has thanked Manchester United fans for their support as he prepares to leave Old Trafford.

In an interview with the club’s website, the Uruguay international confirmed he will leave United when his contract expires at the end of June.

Cavani signed for United on deadline day in 2020, enjoying a superb second-half of the campaign with his goals helping fire United into the Europa League final and secure a second place finish in the Premier League.

Despite initially looking to leave last summer, United convinced him to extend his stay in Manchester by a further season.

In his second campaign with the club however, Cavani was limited to just nine starts in all competitions, contributing just two goals in a disappointing, injury-hit season where he has seldom been fit.

The 35-year-old is one of a host of high-profile stars leaving United over the coming weeks with Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata all out of contract.

‘I sincerely have nothing but words of gratitude towards the fans and supporters of Manchester United,’ Cavani said.

‘Honestly, they have shown me a lot of respect from the very first moment I arrived. I think they’ve greatly recognised all the hard work I’ve always tried to put in in the best way possible, giving my best for this team.

‘I really am very grateful, and I’ll be leaving here with a happy memory of that affection they showed me and always displayed.’
