We show our beloved jewellery collections a lot of love – so it’s only a matter of time before some pieces (especially rings) start to lose their shine.

But that doesn’t mean it’s time to replace them.

A woman on TikTok has revealed how to give old jewellery a new lease of life – without the need for professionals.

Australian retail worker Emma has shared how she transformed her silver jewellery using a common household staple.

In a video posted on TikTok, she explains that all you need is hot water and some baking soda.

Emma can be seen popping her silver rings into a bowl lined with foil, then adding baking soda and pouring hot water over the top.

She says: ‘All you need is a bowl of any kind, pop in some foil in the bottom, baking soda and then put in your jewellery.

‘You can use this on earrings, necklaces, anything with real diamonds or fake diamonds, just as long as it’s 925 [sterling silver].’

It’s clear a chemical reaction takes place between the baking soda and silver when hot water is added, removing any dirt and leaving the rings looking incredibly clean.

Emma also recommends using a toothbrush to carefully clean each piece – followed by a polishing cloth.

The TikTok user stresses that she knows the tricks of the trade as she works at a jewellery shop herself.

She adds: ‘I work at Pandora and the best way is to soak it in warm soapy water and scrub gently with a toothbrush! Use our polishing cloth, it’s how we do it.’

It’s as simple as that.
