As the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend approaches, many people have been keen to find out about all the figures that make up the full Royal Family.

One of those is minor royal Princess Alexandra, who often appears at events such as the garden parties and Royal Ascot.

But who is she and how is she related to Her Majesty?

Who is Princess Alexandra?

The 85-year-old minor royal was born on Christmas Day in 1936 and is the daughter of George Edward, Duke of Kent – son of former King George V – and his wife Princess Marina of Greece.

In 1963, Alexandra got married to Angus Ogilvy – second son of the Earl of Airlie – in Westminster Abbey, which is where he also had his memorial service in 2005 after passing away the previous year.

President or patron of over 100 organisations on behalf of The Queen, Princess Alexandra is a working member of the Royal Family.

She is most well-known for her leading roles in healthcare for those with mental health issues and terminal illnesses – causes which are ‘close to the Princess’s heart,’ according to the official Royal Family’s website.

Alexandra’s interests span across many areas of British life, from being Joint President of Cancer Research UK to her role as patron of the British Goat Society.

Being a working member of the institution, she is also entitled to military roles, including her honorary title as Royal Colonel of 3rd Battalion The Rifles and Colonel in Chief of The Canadian Scottish Regiment.

How is Princess Alexandra related to The Queen?

The Princess is Her Majesty’s cousin and the two are very close, according to reports. In a documentary last year, their relationship was described as ‘very special’ and Alexandra was said to be ‘the closest thing to a sister’ The Queen has.

In fact, Alexandra stood in for The Queen at this year’s Buckingham Palace Garden Party after the monarch’s recent struggle with mobility issues.

But while Princess Alexandra is known for being related to The Queen, she is also related to Prince Philip.

Being the eldest daughter of the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina, she is simultaneously Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin and Prince Philip’s first cousin once removed.
