Bear Grylls made a young Scout’s day as he surprised him with a top award at a televised Jubilee event.

The National Lottery’s Big Jubilee Street Party kicked off on ITV on Saturday, featuring musical acts, interviews with inspirational people and, of course, honours to Queen Elizabeth.

One sweet segment saw Fleur East and Jason Manford interview two young Scouts, Jack and Leo, who had each saved a parent’s life through quick thinking when they had a seizure and asthma attack respectively.

They then introduced Scout volunteer Dan, a dedicated Scout who has been part of the Scouts for since he was six years old and has worked his way up to unit leader.

Dan, who is trans, hailed the institution for giving him the confidence to be himself, and thanked his Scout leaders who were always supportive as he started his transition.

During his interview, Dan was surprised with a video segment showing his twin sister and other Scouts who thanked him for everything he has done, including his ‘passion and enthusiasm’ for Scouting and being a ‘role model’ for other young Scouts.

Dan could be seen becoming emotional as his friends and family lauded him as an ‘inspiration’, but the surprises weren’t over yet.

As Dan tried to take in what was happening, his hero, Bear – aka Chief Scout of the institution – suddenly appeared, from the ceiling no less.

The adventurer abseiled from the roof in pure Grylls style, met by cheers and applause from the 10,000-strong crowd.

Once safely down to earth, Bear presented Dan with the coveted Chief Scout’s Personal Award and thanked him for helping fellow Scouts find the courage to ‘be brave and be yourself.’

He said: ‘On behalf of all Scouts around the world, 57 million Scouts, what an inspiration you have been.’

He hailed Dan’s ‘incredible story and incredible heart’ as he granted the award to Dan, adding: ‘Scouting is like a second family to so many people in terms of friendships and life skills.’

Dan was visibly blown away by the encounter, and had previously described the Scouts as a second family, revealing they were hugely supportive of his transition.

He recalled how, less than a week after he came out and changed his name, he was presented with a brand new uniform bearing his newly-changed name.

The Jubilee extravaganza also saw performances from the likes of the London Gospel Choir, Steps and Lady Blackbird.

Veterans and other heroes were also interviewed, including those who had opened food banks and helped other people in need.
