The Princess of Wales has been confronted face to face by a woman during a visit to Northern Ireland.

She was told ‘Ireland belongs to the Irish’ by a bystander filming on a mobile phone, who had lent over a barrier to shake the royal’s hand.

The red-headed woman wearing a green cardigan can be heard saying ‘nice to meet you but it would be better if you were in your own country’.

Kate laughed off the jibe and quickly moved on to greet someone else, at which point the same woman could be heard saying ‘Ireland belongs to the Irish’.

It happened as she was meeting a crowd of people in Carrickfergus, a coastal town north of Belfast, this afternoon.

She was a few feet away from husband William at the time but he did not appear to hear the comment.

Watching security staff and police officers did not react to the interaction, though it is unclear if they heard it either.

The pair headed for a waiting car soon after, waving to another crowd gathered on the other side of the road before being whisked away.

With the family in the spotlight in recent weeks, it’s the latest incident in which a senior royal has been publicly confronted.

Prince Charles was heckled last month, just nine days after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

During a visit to Wales, a man who had made their way to the front of the crowd said ‘while we struggle to heat our homes, we have to pay for your parade’.

Another incident during the period of mourning saw a man shout ‘you’re a sick old man’ at Prince Andrew while he accompanied his mother’s coffin.

He was taking part in a procession through Edinburgh when a bystander began to shout.

A 22-year-old has been charged with breach of the peace in connection with the incident.
